Humberto Gonzalez was born in Mexico, and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10. He studied at Northern Illinois University in Dekallb, IL, earning a B.A. in Art and Spanish Literature, and then a M.A. in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Art. He moved to Oregon to teach Spanish and Art from 1971 until his retirement in 1999, at which time he returned to painting full time. He was a friend of the late Nelson Sandgren, and a regular at the annual Oregon coast painting outings Sandgren organized.
 
Gonzalez exhibits his watercolors frequently throughout Oregon and beyond, has won numerous awards in juried group shows, and has served as a juror for OSU's Art About Agriculture exhibit three times. He's been showing with Karin Clarke Gallery since 2004.
His paintings are lush, colorful and like the best plein-air work, capture an impression and spirit of the location.
