Lichen is an incredible example of how three radically different species can coexist and benefit each other. In fact, the word 'symbiosis' was coined to describe lichen's relationships. Fungi provides the structure and storage of water and nutrients. Cyanobacteria and Algae use these to photosynthesize carbon from the air, providing food.
