There are communities among us that don't need committees or monthly gatherings to help their neighbors. Red Alder communities are like nurseries for other long-lived tree species, restoring the land after devastation by infusing nitrogen into the soil. Alders don't live long, but they keep invasive species under control, providing an opportunity for little cedars and firs to grow. They play an important role in creating a healthy, long-lasting forest.
