First Friday Artwalk: November 3rd, 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Karin Clarke Gallery is pleased to present local painter and printmaker Tallmadge Doyle's latest work titled Celestial Oceans. The exhibit features a series of multilayered India ink paintings on wooden panels, along with large drawings in pigment pencil and smaller-sized etchings.

Doyle, an artist whose work reflects on environmental issues related to climate change, was originally inspired by the marine phenomenon nicknamed "the Blob", a mass of warm water that first appeared in 2013 off the Pacific Coast of Alaska and strongly disrupted marine wildlife. While investigating marine life forms, Doyle was also looking at Webb telescope imagery. She started incorporating star maps to her depictions of marine life, combining and improvising imagery in which deep space and deep ocean come together.

Originally from New York, Doyle has been a long-time Eugene resident. She received her MFA in Printmaking in 1993 from the University of Oregon, where she taught printmaking for many years as an adjunct professor.

Doyle's work has been featured in over 150 national and international exhibitions, including recent solo shows at the Seattle Art Museum Gallery, OSU Strand Gallery, and the Augen Gallery in Portland. She has received numerous awards and her work is held in over 30 public collections in this country and overseas.

There will be two opportunities to meet Doyle. She will attend the show's Opening Reception held on Friday, October 20, and will give an Artist Talk at 6:00 pm. She will also be present at the gallery during the ArtWalk on Friday, November 3rd.

Please join us to celebrate this artist's exceptional work!

ARTIST STATEMENT

Celestial Oceans considers intricate systems of microscopic ocean life forms simultaneously with the expansive telescopic realm of our solar system's star formations. These natural realities, dissimilar in scope yet, at times indistinguishable in form, overlap and intertwine in my imagination offering boundless creative possibility.

This work serves as a playground for new realities too energetic to be positioned in any one place, where color is ethereal, vivid, and brilliant and where light is unpredictable and form vibrates, allowing access into the immensity of the unexplored abundance and to imagine what is often unseen by human eyes.

This inquiry was initially inspired by a phenomenon nicknamed by marine scientists "The Blob", a mass of warm water found off the Pacific Coast of Alaska, first appearing in 2013. The Blob moved southward to the Northwest and California coasts negatively disrupting marine wildlife from zooplankton to salmon and whale migrations.

I would like to express my gratitude to the Vashon Artist Residency and founder, Cathy Sarkowski, who's generosity and passion for the Arts has inspired me. The gift of time, peace, and space at the Vashon Artist Residency has greatly impacted my ability to expand this series and feel the freedom to conjure up images from the magnificent and mysterious realms of ocean life and outer space.
