Notes from the artist:
The self portrait and 'Cadmium Red' are both part of my more recent phase, the self portrait is one of the first paintings I made when I moved into the studio you visited. The studio, for me, has represented a new period of exploration and study of traditional techniques. In the past I have leant heavily on photographs to paint from and commercial products to paint with. The subjects of these paintings are quite straightforward but they are part of this phase of exploration and were painted with pigments and brushes I made following ancient recipes and with an attachment to working from life which is becoming ever more rigorous.
