Karin Clarke Gallery is proud to present recent work by painter and printmaker George Johanson, a major force in the Portland art scene for nearly 60 years. For 25 years he taught painting, life drawing and printmaking at the Museum Art School in Portland, retiring in 1980.
In 2007, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art did a major retrospective of Johanson's work. The Museum's curator, Roger Hull, wrote a126 page book which chronicles Johanson’s life and times, investigating the vibrant depictions by this painter, printmaker and teacher who has resided in Portland since the late 1940s. Numerous color reproductions illustrate Johanson’s subjects of bathers, swimmers, artists and the streets and vistas of Portland. Hull's book will be available for sale at the gallery, and Hull will be speaking on April 3rd.
This exhibit will showcase his large, bold, acrylic paintings, with themes of jazz musicians, bathers, kayakers, and other figurative works.
