THE COLOR PINK
New Work by Faye Nakamura
September 13 – October 15, 2011
Artist Reception, Friday, September 16, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Karin Clarke Gallery, now located in the Art Annex at 749
Willamette St, is pleased to present its third exhibit of work by Eugene
artist, Faye Nakamura. Nakamura, who was
born in Honolulu, received her BFA degree from the University of Oregon in
1977.
Working in the ceramic medium, Nakamura’s subject matter
is often the nude or draped female form, decorative, heavily outlined, in an
environment of pattern inspired by textiles or nature. The pieces in the current exhibit are a
mixture of glazed and painted clay, vintage textiles, rice paper, shells, and
pebbles. About this work, she states, “The
synthesis of materials has been a process, evolved over years of visual
inquiry, into what, and how to express what appeals to me.”
As the title indicates, PINK is the theme of this
show. For Nakamura, “This color
represents beauty, spirituality, sensuality, joy, strength, and feminine
grace. Translated in my work, it means
serenity.”
Although Nakamura usually sells her work through studio
sales, she has exhibited at Northwest venues, including the University of
Oregon Museum of Art, Maude Kerns Art Center, Lawrence Galleries, and the
Contemporary Crafts Gallery, among others.
An Artist Reception will be held on Friday, September 16,
from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The artist will be
available to discuss her work.
FAYE NAKAMURA
The Fabric in Clay September 2 — October 11, 2008
Karin Clarke Gallery hosts its second solo show for Eugene ceramic artist Faye Nakamura, opening on September 2nd. This will be Faye’s first gallery show since 2004, as she typically presents her work through studio sales and high end craft exhibits.
A gallery show gives Nakamura the opportunity to create some larger work, in both dimension and impact; all the pieces in this show are new, and have been created especially for this exhibit. Her large tile paintings combine both glazed and oil-painted tiles which are grouted together and then framed. Many incorporate vintage obi fabrics into the design. She has a strong and distinctive style: easily recognizable to those who attend fine arts and crafts events in the region. Her subject is often the female nude, both sensual and graphically bold. Beautiful pattern, strong lines, and luminous color characterize her ever-popular work. Nakamura receievd her BFA in ceramics from the University of Oregon in 1977. Prior to that, she studied at the University of Hawaii, in Honlulu, where she was born.
Her resume includes early shows in our area at such venues as the University of Oregon Museum of Art, Maude Kerns Art Center, The Lawrence Galleries in Sheridan and Portland, Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Portland, and many others throughout the Northwest.
The reception for this show, at which the artist will be present, coincides with First Friday, September 5th, from 5:30-8:30pm. Followers of Faye Nakamura’s art, as well as newcomers will be excited to see the size, scope and beauty of her new work. |
